10 Steps to Your First Step

By Adam Glasgow - 4/16/2018

Considering weight loss surgery?  Here are 10 things you can do to decide and prepare!

  1. Think. Are you ready to change your life? Weight loss surgery is a powerful tool but still requires hard work and a commitment to healthy eating. Consider whether you are ready and willing to do what it takes (with a great team to support you!).

  2. Figure out if you qualify. Find a BMI (body mass index) calculator on-line and plug in your height and weight. If you have a BMI of 40 or above, or between 35 and 40 with certain weight-related health conditions, you likely qualify.

  3. Understand your insurance benefits. Call your insurance company and confirm that your plan covers weight loss surgery. Ask what your plan requires and whether you need to document any weight loss attempts. This is also a good time to ask about co-pays and deductibles.

  4. Consult your Primary Care Doctor. If you haven’t visited your PCP recently, schedule an appointment and discuss your interest in weight loss surgery. If your plan requires referrals, make sure you request one.

  5. Talk to someone who has been there. Attend a weight loss surgery support group and talk to people who have gone through the experience. You are welcome to attend one of our support groups or we can find someone who would be happy to chat with you.

  6. Do your research. Take some time to read about weight loss surgery options and how they work. Feel free to also get in touch with us directly with any questions.

  7. Start the supervised weight loss process. Most insurance companies require 3 to 6 months of documented weight loss attempts prior to approving surgery. The sooner you start the process, the more ahead of the game you will be.

  8. Schedule an initial consultation for weight loss surgery. The initial consultation is the first official step in the process. It is an opportunity for you to learn about your options, ask questions and make sure you feel like the program is a good fit for you.

  9. Practice! There are lots of things you can do to prepare and get yourself in the right “head space” to succeed. Start making healthy food choices – proteins, fruits and vegetables. Try a liquid diet for a day. The changes you make now will form the basis of healthy habits later.

  10. Assemble your team! You are not alone. Your surgeon, nutritionist and professional team will partner with you. You can also involve your family and friends in the process and ask for their support.  We’ve got you!
