Happy Holidays!

Make your list and check it twice.  If you have lots of lean protein & colorful fruits and vegetables on your list then you are off to a great start.  We all know food is in abundance during the holidays and I don’t mean those I listed above.  I have come to the realization that the season of overeating  and less healthy foods has extended throughout the year.  This gives new meaning to spreading holiday cheer.  But it is true.  There are so many treats available for Halloween, Thanksgiving, the Holidays, Valentine’s Day, Easter/Passover and then we head right into the summer barbeques and parties.  The cycle starts all over again.  This does not even mention all the birthdays, weddings, anniversaries…thrown in between.  If you keep in mind that there is always a special occasion, that will help you control your intake during the holiday season.  Below are simple Holiday Tips that will help keep you on the right track.

  • Don’t skip meals- You obviously don’t want to arrive at your holiday destination famished!  You are bound to overeat if you do this.  When you are hungry-you tend to want the carbs even more!!
  • Eat the good stuff first- Eating the protein and then vegetables will help you fill up on foods you should be eating.  Then, there is not as much room for the non desirable options (or should I say desirable!)
  • Use a smaller plate.  The more on your plate, the more you tend to eat.
  • Don’t drink your calories.  Avoid the coffee with cream, soda, alcoholic beverages.  Wouldn’t you rather have something good to eat?
  • Research Healthy Recipes.  Try our patient’s recipes posted on our website at www.massweightloss.com
  • Focus on eating.  Remember to take your time and chew.
  • Go for a walk after dinner.  Make this a family tradition rather than the typical nap on the couch.
  • Avoid junk food focused activities.  Instead of candy and cookie making, do crafts with non edible materials.
  • Survey party buffets before you fill your plate.  You will be more likely to make the healthiest selections.
  • Be realistic!  Weight maintenance during the holidays is a good thing.

Consider giving yourself or a family member a wonderful holiday gift of good nutrition.  I am offering a once per month nutrition program for $15.00 per class or commit to a whole year for #120.00 which is a $60.00 savings.  E-mail me at janesylvestre@massweightloss.com or call our office at 508-668-4400.
