From time to time we have the pleasure and opportunity to present a patient perspective.

This month Gail Deneault shares her thoughts on success with the LapBand.  Thank you Gail.

Head vs. Band …..

What a journey I have had the past 4 years.  So many successes and accomplishments, so much to be proud of, yet it has not been a smooth road.  In particular the past year has been a very stressful year both professionally and personally.  There were many...

A Family Affair

Life is so much easier when the healthy lifestyle becomes a family affair.  How much easier would it be if everyone in the family was on the same page and chose to eat healthy and be more active?  This can start with you.  Someone needs to be the person who turns things around.  Whether you are the mother, father or child you can be the one to influence the other family members in a positive way...

I am sitting here on the 4th of July with my family and friends by my side. This is a day of celebration. I couldn't be more appreciative of what I have in my life. I had quite the experience a couple days ago. My husband and I went kayaking with each of my kids (ages 9 and 11) in their own kids' kayaks down the narrow river which is a channel between the open ocean and a brackish inlet in Narraganasett, RI. We were far down the channel when big black storm came upon us with lightening, loud...

What does this mean??? One phrase I hear all too often is "I wish I had a band to wrap around my head." It is possible that the band can be properly adjusted and you feel satisfaction after a small amount of food, but for some reason you continue to eat. Unfortunately, you are physically capable of eating small amounts throughout the day and the band won't stop you. This is called grazing.

To get the most benefit out of the band, try to stick with three solid, protein rich meals...

One of the most popular questions I get as a nutritionist is "how should I fuel my exercise?" Many patients will have a protein bar before or after their workout. Some may opt for a Gatorade type carbohydrate/electrolyte replacement. While others take their trainer's advice and go for a protein drink. I think the greatest misconception is that people need significant carbohydrate or protein to fuel their workouts.

Unless you are training for a marathon or have a marathon workout (2...

………there is always a silver lining, the glass is half full, hard work has its rewards-I could go on and on but you get the idea. The work we do with our bands whether it is coming in for follow up or going to Nutrition classes, taking small bites and chewing slowly, making good choices and separating liquids and solids, going to the gym or just moving more-has a downstream pay-off. Sometimes it just takes longer to realize it. Patience is a virtue and we are in the weight loss/weight...

First of all, let me start by saying that I am so glad Adam is doing well. Our fearless leader gave us all a scare. We are all happy to have Adam back in the office and feeling great!

In March, we had the Veteran Bandsters' Meeting. Adam started the support group by talking about the many non scale victories that our patients have. How wonderful to not worry about whether or not the chairs have arms. How wonderful to tie your shoes with the bows on top. Think about all the little...

Last night Surgical Weight Loss Specialists hosted their first "Veteran Bandster Support Group" for people who have had their Lap-Band 1 year or longer. Depending who you ask and who you believe there were anywhere from 35 to 55 people in attendance. Suffice to say there were so many people there that it was hard to get an accurate count.

We divided in to smaller groups to facilitate discussion and to focus on issues of specific interest to these smaller groups. Those bandsters who...

Life can be tough, but it is a learning experience. My heart was broken yesterday. My 11 year old son Adam had a big presentation in school on a project he had been working on for a few weeks. His presentation was on Wilbur Wright, the inventor of the first successful airplane. He had to dress the part and he looked adorable. He had to present a one minute speech which he practiced his whole winter vacation. He knew it inside and out. When he came home from school, he jumped in the car. I...

You would come in for follow-up!

This Valentine's Day don't send me chocolate just come in for a visit. Tell your loved ones that there are far more productive and supportive ways to express their love than through a gift of sweets. If some how they don't get the message and you find yourself the recipient of a high fructose treat on the holiday, be gracious and then get rid of it as fast as you can. There is no need get off track or jeopardize your hard won gains (really losses) for...
