Thanksgiving 2012

Thanksgiving

Ah, if it weren’t for the food it would be such a great holiday.  No gifts to buy, a four day weekend, lots of family, lots of football, a time of celebration for everyone regardless of religion, race, politics.  Just a feel good holiday-except for the food.

Turkey-nothing wrong with that.  In fact as a lean protein it is hard to beat.  It can be a little tough so sticking to the dark meat may be a good option.  The dangers of the day are the carbohydrates-stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and dessert.  No one who seriously wants to lose weight should be eating these foods.  They have no nutritional value and are often not band friendly.

As you approach the holiday meal you must have a plan.  Eat your protein first and in small bites and chew carefully.  If your family tradition involves something other than turkey, like ham or roast beef, you must be particularly careful to take small bites and chew carefully and slowly.  These proteins can be challenging especially if they are at all dried out.

Vegetables come next and remember that not all veggies are created equal.  In general the more colorful the vegetable-the better it is for you.  Potatoes-both baking and sweet, corn, and squash are relatively starchy, hard on the band, and full of extra calories.  Steaming, sautéing, and roasting are excellent ways to prepare your veggies.  There is no reason to ever bread or fry or sauce your food.

Enough with the dry diatribe about eating.  If you are reading this-you already know what to do-your challenge is doing it.  My holiday wish-beyond peace on earth and an end to war, famine, and persecution is that all members of Adam’s Family find the strength, courage, conviction and support to do what they know they need to do to be happy, healthy, and successful at weight loss.  The band is just a tool and you’ve got to use it to lose it.  If you are-great-keep it up.  If you aren’t-then start today-do not delay.

Remember “the family” is always there for you.  The clinical team, nutrition team, and Dr. Newman are only ever a phone call away and would love to see you whenever you need to be seen.  Support Groups are twice a month and the on-line group meets every Wednesday from 7-8 pm and also 9-10 pm.  We have many wonderful mentors who are more than willing to reach out and encourage you.

I look forward to seeing you in the office soon.  If you need me before that-don’t hesitate to email-adam@massweightloss.com or call.  Take care, be well.  Stay healthy.
