March Madness, Sadness, and Gladness

As I sit here typing this on the 19th of March, the day before Spring begins, I think of the “madness” of the weather.  A week ago it was sunny and 55 and today snowy, sleety, rainy and 34.  Next week it will likely be Spring and then undoubtedly we will have one last gasp of winter before warmth and sunshine arrive for a few solid months.   The craziness of the weather is not the only craziness that I encounter-“how are you eating, is anything sticking, do you feel satisfied?”  “I am fine unless I eat a bagel.”  “I am great until I eat Chinese food.”  “As long as I go slow and chew nothing gets stuck.”  Is there any reason why someone who has been to seminar, visited with me, seen the Nutritionist, seen the Psychologist, read all the support materials, and actually had LapBand surgery would eat a bagel or Chinese food?  What possible explanation could there be for NOT eating slowly, chewing carefully, taking small bites, separating liquids and solids, and in general making good choices.  If anyone knows of a good one please let me know.  On a daily basis I encounter way too many poor choices, I am witness to excessive and unnecessary self-sabotage, and hear stories that really make me scratch my head.  Enough. Enough. Enough.  Weight loss is not rocket science-it is EATING GOOD FOOD, LESS OF IT, and MOVING MORE!  If you have a LapBand and you aren’t doing those three crucial activities then that is madness, more madness even than snow on the day before Spring.

Life is not perfect-far from it.  Things happen-sometimes very sad things.  We get upset, we get depressed.  Eating will not help!  Eating “bad foods,” eating “comfort foods,” eating “junk foods” will not help.  In fact, many times it only makes it worse.  When our sadness and depression over the original event lift-and they always do-we are still left upset about our eating .  Don’t be an emotional eater!  Eating is not going to change anything for the better.  No matter how good a cookie or a sundae or French Fries may taste in the moment-and it is just a moment-their negative effects will be felt for days or weeks or even longer.   The old saying “once past the lips and never off the hips” is pretty true.  I would revise it to say “almost never off the hips” because with hard work and commitment and a LapBand you can get it off and keep it off.

Gladness-there is lots of that lately.  Today a patient came in to the office to have her LapBand drained-why-because she is pregnant.  She couldn’t conceive prior to weight loss but now she is 60 lbs lighter and four months pregnant.  She is actually the second pregnant patient in the practice this week.  In my line of work it doesn’t get much better than that.  Today a very successful patient informed me that she just registered for her first 10K road race-awesome!  Yesterday a patient proudly reported that she had been to her Primary Care doctor last week and was doing so well and had gotten so healthy that she was now off diabetes medication and her blood pressure medication was reduced by half.  Real people, real success, real gladness.

I look forward to seeing you soon and hearing whatever you have to share.  I hope it is gladness but know that I am here to help with the madness and the sadness too.  There is no “I” in team.  We are in this together.  I can always be reached by email adam@massweightloss.com, or on my cell 508 801 7018 but remember if you think it is urgent it is best to call the office 508 668 4400 and have me poaged.
