February Philosophy

By Adam Glasgow - 2/28/2017

This past month has had its share of interest and excitement.   I admit to a little distraction and have been a little slow to put together this next blog.  In our far too frequent striving to just “get through the day,” we often fail to see and to appreciate the message and the meaning in our lives.  I had a slow start to the day, not a typical “manic Monday,” so I sat down to ponder some of the recent and exciting stories from this fabulous, fun, and freaky February.

The Patriots’ Win – Well I could probably just stop at that and you’d all understand exactly what I mean. But my real learning from the Super Bowl came after the game itself, when I was listening to the “miked up” version of the Patriot players during the game. Hearing Edelman rally his teammates to never to give up, struck me as a true testament to the power of the mind.  How many of us quit and became dejected just watching the first half on TV?  We all need to have a little more Patriot in us.  There is ALWAYS hope and ALWAYS a chance for redemption no matter how bleak things look. NEVER GIVE UP.

70 Degrees in February – Expect the unexpected. Just when you think you’ve got things figured out, life can throw you a curveball. Sometimes it’s a good curveball (the 70 degree kind) and sometimes not so much.  We can’t always control what life hurls at us, so enjoy the good moments when you have them, and understand there will be challenging times too.  Be spontaneous and ready to take advantage of pleasant surprises.  To quote from a favorite movie, Risky Business, “sometimes you’ve got to say what the…….” Put on a pair of shorts in February, take a beach walk, play some Frisbee, make the most of the moment.  Next week it could be snowing but it’s NOT today.

A Long Weekend –I love long weekends.  A Monday office full with patients is great but….there is something about a long weekend and what often feels like a bonus chance to rest and rejuvenate.  This past President’s Day Weekend, Jordana and I went to the Cape.  Is there a better time to go than “off season?”  I don’t think so.  We even got out on Coast Guard Beach for a great walk and yup, you guessed it, found sea glass.  Make time and take time for the new and the different, as well for the “oldies and the goodies.”

The Oscars – I don’t usually get pay much attention to the Oscars although I may take a peek as Jordana watches the Red Carpet fashion coverage.   I had long since gone to bed when the Best Picture award was presented and then retracted. Here’s my take away:  We ALL make mistakes. Sometimes they are on the big stage and all the world sees and sometimes only we know we flubbed or failed.  It’s how we handle the mistake that makes the difference. From what I could tell, it looks like everyone handled this mistake graciously and professionally.  They owned it, they apologized, and they moved on.  None of us are perfect.  If your weight loss hasn’t been what you want it to be, if the choices haven’t been great, and the exercise has been less than it should, forget about it.  That’s in the past.  Today is a new day, a new chance, and you need to embrace it.

So there you have my February inspired Philosophy.  Next month is March Madness……. And I for one can’t wait.
