Boston as an Inspiration

Writing a blog this month is difficult to do because my heart is in one place this week and that is Boston. I am writing this blog at work as I hear the tribute to Sean Collier on the TV in the waiting room.  I am sure we have all felt the pain of last Monday’s tragedy.  I can only imagine the horror that took place in the streets of Boston and Watertown.  Of course, the news stations painted a pretty clear...

Why a change of seasons is so nice and weight maintenance is so difficult

Doesn’t everyone love spring, and summer (if it’s not too hot), and fall with the beautiful foliage, and even winter (at least the excitement of the first snow?) We love the seasons because we love change. We hunger for what is new, different, and exciting.

The start of every diet, of every weight loss journey, of every “honeymoon” after weight loss surgery is filled with...

Right Back at Ya

I heard a great story this week that was a great boost to my motivation. I hope it will be helpful to you as well.  Here is the story…

There once was a little boy who lived in a valley.  One day he had a terrible fight with his father and then left the house in a rage.  As he left, he screamed “I hate you.”  He ran to the top of a mountain near his house and continued to scream “I hate you” and then he heard back “I hate...

March Madness, Sadness, and Gladness

As I sit here typing this on the 19th of March, the day before Spring begins, I think of the “madness” of the weather.  A week ago it was sunny and 55 and today snowy, sleety, rainy and 34.  Next week it will likely be Spring and then undoubtedly we will have one last gasp of winter before warmth and sunshine arrive for a few solid months.   The craziness of the weather is not the only craziness that I encounter-“how are you eating, is...

A Spring Thing to Do!

All I can think is spring, spring, and spring!  I can hear the birds in the morning at my window.  My tulips are starting to peek through the ground.  I can feel slight warmth and the days are getting longer.  Having all the beautiful weather ahead of you is such a wonderful feeling.

It is definitely time to clean out, get healthy and get moving.  This is a time of year when I send out the reminder of all the...

February Blog

It was an exciting Super Bowl.  Unfortunate that the Patriot’s weren’t in it, but a true fan could appreciate that it was a well played game and that the outcome wasn’t decided until the game’s final play.  Afterward, a frequent comment was that “the winning team wanted it more.”  Often times we hear that a superstar is the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave.  Many ascend to and stay at the top of their game because they are ever striving to prove...

Lots to Learn

I was preparing the “Bariatric Bingo” game and was wondering how I would ever come up with 40-50 questions regarding the band.  I thought there were so few guidelines and they were very basic.  As soon as I started writing out the questions they kept coming one after the other.  I realized there is so much to learn.  I had even more content than I needed.

The guidelines are not just about eating 3 meals per day,...

October Blog 2012

Congratulations to all of you who completed the 4 mile Norwood Hospital Walk/Run.  I was so proud of all of you, many of whom are just starting out.  What a wonderful accomplishment to complete at the beginning of your journey.  I know many of you who have significantly cut your time from last year.  Think back about how far you have come from when you first started. I remember doing the trial run with a patient last year who was huffing and puffing and struggled to...

A Present for Yourself

How much can you give of yourself before you realize that it is time to take care of you too?  I challenge you this holiday season to give yourself the gift of good health.  There are so many ways you can do this.

  • Buy yourself a gym membership.
  • Buy a personal planner (electronic or not) where you schedule in exercise as often as feasibly possible.
  • Plan your weekly meals in your planner too...

Thanksgiving

Ah, if it weren’t for the food it would be such a great holiday.  No gifts to buy, a four day weekend, lots of family, lots of football, a time of celebration for everyone regardless of religion, race, politics.  Just a feel good holiday-except for the food.

Turkey-nothing wrong with that.  In fact as a lean protein it is hard to beat.  It can be a little tough so sticking to the dark meat may be a good option.  The dangers of the day are...
